Promoting Ridership
With the support of Walgreens, and in partnership with Red Nose Day USA that works to end childhood poverty, we helped organize two four-day fundraising bike rides called Ride On 4 Red Nose Day. The Ride On events began in 2012, when cyclocross national champion Tim Johnson organized a ride from Boston to Washington D.C. to increase awareness for bike safety and raise money for PeopleForBikes. This year’s events included rides that began on both coasts, as riders pedaled from Santa Barbara to Las Vegas, or Boston to New York City. NASCAR drivers Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth joined us, as did former NHL star Andrew Ferrence. We raised more than $250,000 for Red Nose USA.
Bike Biz
In September, PeopleForBikes president Tim Blumenthal addressed more than 600 bike industry leaders at the annual Interbike Industry Breakfast. The breakfast also featured a keynote address by Brian Payne, the founder of the famous Indianapolis Cultural Trail. In an interview with Bicycle Retailer and Industry News preceding the event, Blumenthal said, "The success of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail is indisputable, as the bike business, general local business and property values have all increased since it was completed.” This annual event, part of the pre-eminent U.S. trade show, provides an opportunity for PeopleForBikes to connect with the bike industry companies that fund and support our work — including Interbike, a top PFB sponsor for more than a decade.
